Atari 2600 games set for reboot via new console
The gaming industry has come a long way in recent years with gamers now being treated to content available in 4K, but there has been a growing appeal for the retro market as it seems Atari 2600 games are set for a reboot via a new Ataribox console.
Atari begun teasing some new hardware earlier this year at the E3 event promising a new piece of hardware, and now the company has now teased us some more by revealing the images that you can see on this page.
The new console is clearly inspired by the classic wood version of the iconic Atari 2600 console, and has stated that “our objective is to create something new, that stays true to our heritage, while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.”
There is SD card support, four USB ports, and a HDMI port with the console coming in wood or black/ red versions. It seems Atari will be offering something along the lines of NES Classic Edition and will probably provide gamers access to some of the company’s classic titles.
It has been stated that the device will also be able to play current content, though again that could mean really anything. The company continued “We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, pricing, timing,” reads an Atari statement. “We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring this to life, and to listen closely to the Atari community feedback as we do so.”
