Cassette tapes could be the new vinyl
Over the last couple of years we have seen the sales of vinyl records and turntables booming as consumers return to the technology, and it seems that cassette tapes could be the new vinyl as sales increase.
Digital downloads looked to have killed analogue mediums such as vinyl and cassette tapes, but it looks as if the tide has turned with many rushing back to their turntables, although many never left them in the first place loving the sometimes superior sound quality with the right setup over digital.
Now away from vinyl it seems sales of cassette tapes have risen by 75% last year, reaching over 129,000 compared to 74,000 the year before. The resurgence of the cassette tape has been led by sales of The Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 soundtrack, but has also been helped by sales of Bieber’s Purpose and The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness.
Sales of classic albums such as Eminem’s The Slim Shady LP and Prince and the Revolution’s Purple Rain have also helped and these figures come from, Nielsen Music, which is a US based entertainment information and audience measurement company.
While these figures are small fry compared to the 723 million digital song downloads last year and 431 million streams, we may see the same thing happening to cassette tapes as we did with vinyl.
