Galaxy S8 officially launched with release date and price
The year is progressing along nicely and while the clocks recently changed in certain areas in time for summer the Samsung Galaxy S8 has just been officially launched providing details of all the specifications, release date, and price.
Samsung has just unveiled its latest flagship smartphones to the world in the form of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus with many of the details leaked weeks ago. Both handsets feature curved edges but these are more subtle than the S7 Edge, and are also complemented by curves on the rear of the handset.
According to the company this makes them a more “natural fit in one hand”, and as you can see there is barley any bezel on the sides of the handsets while also shrinking above and below the display.
As reported before there is no capacitive home button and the fingerprint scanner has moved around the back of the handset, and instead there are software buttons with on-screen back and recent app keys either side of the home button.
There is now an iris scanner that was originally found on the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 that has been vastly improved according to Samsung. Of course there is a 3.5mm headphone along with a USB Type-C port, while underneath the volume rocker is a physical key for Samsung’s new Bixby virtual assistant.
As can be expected both handsets are rocking some pretty impressive specs with both featuring 64-bit Octa core processors using the 10 nm process, which is paired with 4GB of RAM with 64GB of internal storage as standard, which can be expanded by up to 256GB via microSD card.
The S8 has a 5.8-inch QUAD HD+ display at a resolution of 2960 x 1440 providing 570ppi while the S8 Plus has a 6.2-inch screen at the same resolution with 529ppi. Samsung has changed the aspect ratio to 18.5.9 meaning they have managed to pack a larger display without increasing the form factor a great deal.
Samsung revealed they worked with the UHD Alliance to ensure they are the world’s first “mobile HDR” smartphones. Powering the handsets is a 3,000 mAh battery on the S8 while the S8 Plus is a 3,500 mAh unit.
Samsung has again provided fast charging paired with Qi and PMA wireless charging support, while there is an IP68 rating. Camera wise both handsets have been given 12MP Dual Pixel sensors with an f/1.7 aperture for the main camera, and around the front you will find an 8-megapixel shooter.
Both cameras will actually take three images at a time and use two of them to sharpen up the final picture, and there is now a new one-handed zoom feature in the camera app. UK pre-orders are now open running until April 19th with these promised for delivery on April 20th.
General availability kicks off on April 28th in the UK and Europe with the Galaxy S8 costing £689 with the S8 Plus coming in at £779, obviously this is unlocked prices with carrier pricing expected in due course.
