Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus launched and priced
After months of speculation and reliable leaks Samsung a few hours ago launched the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus with pricing along with pre-orders commencing in certain regions.
We have already provided you with a lot of early leaked information about the first Samsung flagships of 2018 and now the company have revealed the handsets officially and its Unpacked event.
The two handsets look similar to last year’s models with the S9 featuring a 5.8-inch display with the S9+ opting for a 6.2-inch screen both at QHD resolution. Samsung has slimmed down the bezels on both models meaning they have a slightly smaller footprint.
One welcome new design is the fingerprint sensor that has been moved to the centre of the handsets rear, but the biggest new features are the camera setup. The dual 12-megapixel main shooter on both handsets is now capable of variable aperture allowing owners to choose between f/1.5 and f/2.4 with OIS.
This should allow for excellent low light images and both smartphones have the new “Super Slow-mo” mode that can record slow motion video at 960 FPS. On the front of the S9 is an 8-megapixel camera borrowed from the S8 with f/1.7 lens and autofocus.
The S9+ meanwhile has a 12-megapixel sensor with f/2.4 lens, OIS, and dual-pixel AF. Another addition to both handsets is a stereo speaker setup tuned by AKG with Dolby Atmos support, which Samsung claim to be 40% louder than the Galaxy S8.
They will come running Android Oreo with the latest Grace UX. There is new support of AR Emojis, improved KNOX, and Intelligent Scan security making use of the iris scanner and face unlock at the same time.
Under the hood the handsets will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 or Exynos 9810 Octa Core processors depending on region, with the S9 paired with 4GB of RAM while the S9+ gets 6GB of RAM.
Supplying the juice is a 3,000 mAh unit in the S9 and a 3,500 mAh battery pack in the larger model which is the same as last year. Pre-orders have started now in Europe with the US getting them from March 1st and a release coming on March 16th.
Pricing comes in at £869 for the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus 128GB version direct from Samsung for an unlocked model in Midnight Black, Coral Blue, and Lilac Purple. The Galaxy S9 is priced at £739 with the same colour options. Obviously all the major carriers will be offering their own deals with a new two year contract.
